Code of Ethics
Membership in the National Association of REALTORS® ensures that the real estate professional identified by the REALTOR® symbol has subscribed to the NAR Code of Ethics. REALTOR® members are required as a condition of membership to attend training on Professional Standards practices and procedures once every four years in order to retain active membership status. Read the REALTOR® Pledge of Performance and Service.
REALTOR® members commit to business integrity and a sense of fair dealing. Certain rights, privileges and requirements are afforded to REALTOR® members as well as the general public with respect to the Code of Ethics and Arbitration procedures.
The REALTOR® Code of Ethics is enforced at the local level through the Montgomery County Association of REALTORS®. Any person who feels a REALTOR® may have violated the Code of Ethics may file an Ethics Complaint against a member of this Association. The MCAR Grievance Committee will review the complaint and forward it for a professional standards hearing if warranted.

MCAR's Professionalism Task Force developed a list of courtesies, known as the "Principles of Practice," which were designed to serve as the basis for acceptable professional behavior by MCAR REALTORS®. While these standards of conduct cannot be used as the basis for a professional standards complaint, they are intended to augment the Code of Ethics subscribed to by all REALTOR® Members.
Arbitration/Mediation (Financial Disputes Between Brokers)
Arbitration is a means of resolving disputes, generally involving commissions and compensation, which arise out of business relationships between brokers. REALTOR® Association members are required to Arbitrate, rather than litigate, disputes, pursuant to Article 17 of the Code of Ethics. Contact Edie Szczypiorski at MCAR for more information, at 610-260-9931 or edies@mcarealtors.org.
Home Buyers/Home Seller Dispute Resolution System (DRS Mediation)
The Pennsylvania Association of REALTORS® Home Buyer/Home Seller Dispute Resolution System mediation program provides an affordable means for parties involved in a real estate transaction to resolve any financial disputes that may arise. Mediation is a process through which the parties, usually the buyer and the seller, meet with a trained professional and attempt to resolve their dispute outside of the courts.
